Alumni Fellows

The Alumni Fellows program recognizes alumni who have distinguished themselves in their careers. The program is sponsored by the Dean's Council, the Office of the President and the K-State Alumni Association.

2019 Alumni Fellow

Barbara W. Ballard, Ph.D. 

BallardBarbara W. Ballard, Ph.D., Lawrence, Kansas, is the associate director of the Dole Institute of Politics at the University of Kansas and a state representative for Kansas' 44th district.

At KU she previously served as an associate vice chancellor for student affairs, associate dean for student life and the director of the Emily Taylor Women's Resource Center. Ballard teaches courses for KU's School of Education and Department of Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies.

Ballard has been a member of the Kansas Legislature since 1992. She serves on the Appropriations, Social Services Budget and Transportation committees, as well as the Joint Committee on Home and Community Based Services and KanCare Oversight. She also serves on the House Leadership Team as the Democratic Caucus Chair. Ballard is the first African American in party leadership, serving for more than 15 years.

She is the past president of the National Black Caucus of State Legislators and is president of its Foundation. She was inducted into the KU Women's Hall of Fame in 1985.

Ballard earned two degrees from K-State: a master's degree in guidance and counseling in 1976 and a doctorate in counseling and student personnel services in 1980.
